The position of Fire and Life Safety Director (FLSD) is an integral part of the Fire Department of the City of New York’s (FDNY) strategy to ensure the safety of the occupants of high rise office buildings. Since its adoption in 1973, New York City Local Law 5 has mandated that all Class B office buildings have an FLSD in the building at all times during business hours or at any time that the building is occupied by more than 500 persons or more than 100 above or below the ground floor (other circumstances which require the presence of an FLSD may also apply). The FLSD is responsible for implementing the building’s Fire Safety Plan in the event of a fire or smoke condition.

The procedure to become a FLSD begins consists three courses of instruction from a school accredited by the FDNY.  The candidate must take and pass a total of 31 hours of coursework:

• 20 hour Fire Safety course
  • Global Security Group’s course is 5 consecutive mornings – 1 week
• 7 hour Non-fire Safety course
  • Global Security Group’s course is done in 1 day
    • Either 9am – 5pm or 2pm – 10pm
• 4 hour Active Shooter/Medical Emergency Preparedness course
